Our soap starts differently. It starts here, on our ranch in Kuna, Idaho, with the same ostrich oil that comes from the birds we raise on this property. And every step between that oil and the bar that arrives at your door happens right here.
This is how we make it.
IT STARTS WITH THE OIL
The primary ingredient in every bar of AOF Artisan Ostrich Oil Soap is 100% pure American ostrich oil. Not a trace amount. Not a secondary ingredient listed near the bottom of the label. The primary ingredient, present in a concentration that makes it the foundation of everything the soap does for your skin.
Ostrich oil is rich in oleic acid and palmitic acid, which together make up over 70 percent of its fatty acid composition. That concentration is what gives ostrich oil its ability to penetrate the skin rather than sit on the surface of it. It absorbs cleanly, delivers moisture to the layers where the skin actually needs it, and does not leave the heavy greasy residue that many oil-based products leave behind.
It is also rich in Omega fatty acids, specifically Omega 3, 6, and 9, which support the skin's natural barrier function and contribute to the kind of long term skin health that shows up as softness, resilience, and a reduction in the dryness and irritation that most people associate with conventional soap use.
THE ADDITIONAL OILS
To the ostrich oil base we add a carefully selected blend of pure plant-based oils chosen specifically to enhance both the cleansing and moisturizing performance of the finished bar.
Babassu, almond, coconut, sunflower, and shea butter each bring something specific to the formula. Together they are optimized for two things: deep effective cleansing that actually removes what needs to be removed, and maximum moisture return to the skin after cleansing. The goal is a bar that cleans thoroughly without stripping the skin of what it needs to stay healthy and comfortable.
No parabens. No phthalates. No sodium lauryl sulphate. No synthetic fragrances. Nothing that doesn't belong on skin that you are going to wash every day.
THE PROCESS
Once the oils are selected and measured, they are blended together over heat until the mixture is smooth and consistent throughout. The heat allows the oils to combine fully and ensures an even distribution of every ingredient in the finished bar.
The blended mixture is then poured into molds and left to set for two full days. During this time the soap solidifies from a liquid mixture into a solid loaf that holds its shape and structure.
After two days the loaf is removed from the molds and sliced by hand into individual bars using a cutting device that uses sharp wire strings stretched across a frame. If you have ever seen the inside of a piano the mechanism looks remarkably similar. Each pull of the wire produces a clean even slice that becomes the bar you eventually hold in your hand.
THE CURE
This is the step most people do not know about and the one that matters most for the quality of the finished product.
After the bars are cut, they cure for an additional thirty days before they are labeled and ready to ship. Curing isn't optional and it’s not a shortcut we take. It’s the process by which the soap hardens fully, the bar becomes long-lasting, and the final texture and lather of the product develop to their full potential.
A soap bar that has not cured properly is softer, breaks down faster in the shower, and does not lather the way a properly cured bar does. The thirty-day cure is why our bars last as long as they do and why the lather is as rich and consistent as it is. It is also one of the reasons we make soap in small batches. You can’t rush a cure.
MADE HERE FOR A REASON
Making soap on the farm is not the most efficient way to produce soap. There are contract manufacturers who could do it faster and at higher volume. We make it here because making it here means we know exactly what goes into it, exactly how it is made, and exactly what leaves this property with our name on it.
It is also an expression of something we believe about what a farm should be. Ostrich gives us meat for the table, oil for the skin, and protein for pet products. The soap is made from the same oil that comes from the same birds that produce everything else we make. Nothing goes to waste. Every part of the animal contributes something.
That philosophy doesn’t change because it would be more convenient to outsource it.
HOW TO USE IT
Wet skin, lather up, and rinse well. Use it daily for skin that feels consistently softer and more hydrated. It works on hands, face, feet, and everything in between. For sensitive skin, the unscented version is the most natural starting point. The formula is suitable for daily all-body use and free from the ingredients that tend to cause irritation in conventional soaps.
